Felicia Leimbacher peeked up from her newest paperback—a mystery novel about a young woman and her twin who’d been separated at birth—as her husband appeared in the doorway. Bryan Leimbacher was nearly six-two, and his lean frame was exactly what one would expect from a man whose favorite hobby was running. Personally, Felicia couldn’t stand most forms of cardio, but Bryan loved them all.

He offered her a warm smile as he padded across the bedroom. “Security system’s armed, and Vinnie’s still conked out in his doggie bed in the living room. He really loves the new bed you got for him. Especially when the sun streams through the front window and warms him while he’s sleeping.”

Despite the rampant paranoia that had followed Felicia ever since she’d learned of the Acid Attacker, she grinned. “See? I knew it was a good idea for you to take him with you on your run. He’d be in here begging us for snacks or something if you hadn’t.”

Bryan crawled into his side of the bed. “It was a great idea. I bet he’ll get some good sleep, which means he’ll have plenty of energy to beg for snacks in the morning.”

Felicia couldn’t help laughing. Their German shepherd was coming up on three years old, and his love for people food was just as prominent as it had been when he was a puppy. If Bryan and Felicia were eating something, Vinnie was automatically interested, even if it was a veggie tray.

Vinnie’s antics always made Felicia laugh, and she’d started to consider creating a social media account just for him. She didn’t mention him often on her platforms. Part of her wanted to keep a little piece of her life private from her followers, but who knew how many people she could cheer up by sharing her goofy German shepherd with them?

As Bryan clicked off the lamp on his side of the bed, Felicia marked her spot in the paperback and set the book beside her phone. Once the room was bathed in darkness, she snuggled up beside her husband, closed her eyes, and let herself drift off to sleep.

Dreams weren’t a common occurrence for Felicia, but when her unconscious brain took her to an idyllic picnic with Bryan and Vinnie, she couldn’t complain. The sun’s radiant glow warmed her skin, and she and Bryan laughed as Vinnie rolled around in the lush grass next to their picnic blanket.

The scene was so wholesome and picturesque, Felicia was struck by mental whiplash when Vinnie started to growl. Taking a step toward the German shepherd, she reached out to him. “Vinnie, what’s—”

The question from her dream vanished like a wisp of smoke as real-world Vinnie let out a series of earsplitting barks from his dog bed under the large picture window in the front of the house.

Pulling in a sharp breath, Felicia bolted upright in bed. They’d gone to sleep with the bedroom door partly open. It was something they did for Vinnie, in case there was a thunderstorm and he needed comforting.
